WHY DON'T ?? CHEMISTS think their field is innovative enough

About 80% of chemists surveyed  by Reaxys think people are gone  towards other scientific fields with more ‘newsworthy’ research         A survey lead by   Reaxys , Elsevier’s web-based chemical data retrieval tool, suggests that chemistry has an innovation problem when compared with other disciplines, and that this may be harming its ability to attract and retain talented scientists. Reaxys polled 186 chemists from across academia and industry, 78% of whom said they thought potential chemists chose to go into other sciences because the research seemed more ‘newsworthy’.

ORIGIN OF GOLD ,SILVER and PLATINUM

N An illustration of two neutron stars colliding For the first time, astronomers have detected a neutron-star collision. Gravitational waves heard by two detectors pinpointed the source to a galaxy 130 million light-years away. The collision produced a radioactive "kilonova" that forged hundreds of Earths' worth of platinum, gold, silver, and other atoms. The discovery solves a longstanding mystery about the origins of heavy elements. Platinum and gold are among the most precious substances on Earth, each fetching roughly $1,000 an ounce. However, their allure may grow stronger - and weirder - thanks to a groundbreaking new finding about their violent, radioactive, and cosmic origins. On Monday, scientists  who won a Nobel Prize  for their discovery of gravitational waves, or  ripples in the fabric of space , announced the first detection of the collision of two neutron stars. The team alerted astronomers all over the world to the event right afte...

Croyo-Electron Microscopy

This  technic is the main reason for wining Nobel price of chemistry  2017.C ryo-electron microscopy  ( cryo-EM ), or  electron cryomicroscopy , is a form of  transmission electron microscopy (TEM) where the sample is studied at  cryogenic  temperatures (generally  liquid-nitrogen  temperatures).Cryo-EM is gaining popularity in  structural biology . The utility of cryoelectron microscopy stems from the fact that it allows the observation of specimens that have not been stained or fixed in any way, showing them in their native environment. This is in contrast to  X-ray crystallography , which requires crystallizing the specimen, which can be difficult, and placing them in non-physiological environments, which can occasionally lead to functionally irrelevant conformational changes. The resolution of cryo-EM maps is improving steadily, and in 2014 some structures at near-atomic resolution had been obtained, including tho...
